Backingstone was a town/hamlet/settlement once but no longer exists. It is shown on the 1587 Saxton's map of Glamorganshire. Does anyone know where it was exactly and what happened to it?

Have heard of this before being an old bishopstonian myself (hey less of the old) but don't know anything about it. Found this which relates to 1917 though http://www.archivesnetworkwales.info/cgi-bin/anw/search2?» coll_id=11719&inst_id=35&term=backingstone

Is this for research or just personal interest BTW. Bouncing Grin

Thanks Moley

The connection was helpful. I also saw reference to Backingstone on a 1883 ordance survey map. It shows Backingstone where the present Backingstone Farm is situated.

Purely personal interest .

Regards

Sorry, I don't know, but there is a "Backingstone Lane" in Bishopston. It's over near Pwll Du beach/valley - over by the houses known locally as "Chantry Acre" and "The Vineyards"

Moley will know it.

Map here :

Sorry not any more help!

Backinstone was a very old looking farmhouse until some 25 years ago. There were some very thick walls remaining of some former glory only a few feet high but perhaps 3 ft thick. All gone I would think now. It has been extensivrly developed. I would love to have more info if you have any. Chris Evans
